1998 Slot Car Challenge
1998 Slot Car Challenge, New York City. Sponsored by Automobile Magazine to raise money for Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camps for children with life-threatening illnesses. CART drivers Alex Zanardi, Bobby Rahal, Brian Herta and Christian Fittipaldi, along with team owners Chip Ganassi and Carl Haas, raced slot cars against guests and each other for charity. Veteran race announcer Chris Economaki called the action.
Lou Del Rosario, owner of the Elmsford Group Slot Car Raceways, provided the cars and organized the installation of the Ogilvie tri-oval race track in the Tourneau Building in Manhattan. John Marconi and Doug Harrison painted the car bodies in the style of the real ones. The drivers autographed the cars and they were auctioned off to raise more money for the kids. In all over $25,000 was raised for The Hole in the Wall Gang Camps.
